Questions to Ask When House-Hunting with Pets

A furry friend is part of the family. So, when you’re house-hunting, keep their needs in mind as well. That being said, here are some questions you should ask yourself (and your real estate agent) when considering a new home for you and your pet(s):

What are the Local Pet Laws?

Before you start your house hunt, it’s a good idea to find out what the local pet laws are. For example, in California, when you take your pet out, they must be on a maximum 6-foot leash. In addition, you won’t be able to take your dog to some beaches where dogs are not allowed. This means that if you find the local laws too harsh, you may not be able to live in that city in peace!

How Much Yard Space Do I Need?

If you have a small dog, they may be content with a yard that’s just a few steps from the house. However, a dog that’s 30 inches long requires at least 9 square feet of resting space. So, if you’ve got a larger dog or one that needs to run around to stay healthy, you’ll want to make sure there’s more square footage, enough for them to run and play. So, if you own a breed that’s hyperactive like the German Shepherd, you’ll need more space than a person with a more sluggish pet like a pug.

What Pet-Friendly Features Does the Home Have?

When you’re house-hunting with pets in mind, you’ll want to make sure the property in question has pet-friendly features. This can include a doggy door, a designated area for your pet to relieve themselves, or a fenced-in yard. And if the property doesn’t have any of these features, you may even be able to add them yourself.

How Much Maintenance is Required?

Homes that require a lot of upkeep may not be the best choice if you have a pet. Dogs, in particular, need to be taken out several times a day, and if your yard is full of things that need to be watered or mowed, it can make it difficult to find the time to take care of your pet as well as your plants. You’ll also want floors that are easy to clean in case of accidents and mess caused by pets.
